Cristina Amat is a Spanish contemporary artist born in Penedès, Barcelona, and currently based in Sitges (a coastal town with a long artistic tradition, where the presence of the sea, its energy, and changing light influence her work).

Her practice centers on the human face as a space of presence, identity, and truth. Working with oil on canvas and expressive impasto, Cristina creates contemporary portraits that go beyond representation. Through color, texture, and gesture, she explores inner strength, sensitivity, and vulnerability as lived experiences rather than abstract ideas.

Her figures embody sensuality, courage, determination, and emotional intensity. Each face, each gaze, and each mark carries intention, inviting a direct and personal connection. These are not idealized portraits, but works that reveal complexity, resilience, and authenticity.

Cristina’s work is created for those who recognize themselves in it. Her paintings are not decorative objects, but pieces that inhabit a space and establish a quiet dialogue with the viewer, works that hold presence, memory, and meaning.

Today, Cristina continues to develop a distinctive pictorial language that merges emotion, aesthetics, and depth, creating portraits that resonate over time and become part of the lives and identities of those who collect them.

Story

From an early age, Cristina was drawn to painting, spending countless hours drawing and experimenting with color. She received formal training in drawing during her youth and later studied design, a period that shaped her visual sensitivity and understanding of composition.

After years following a different professional path, a profound personal turning point led her back to painting — not as a hobby, but as a commitment. Since then, her practice has become a space of constant exploration and evolution.

Cristina gradually replaced brushes with palette knives, developing a technique based on thick layers of oil paint applied with different spatulas and vibrant colors. This process gives her work a strong physical presence and an almost sculptural quality, where texture becomes as essential as the image itself.

As a self-taught and continuously evolving artist, Cristina embraces experimentation as a core part of her practice. Her work is driven by intuition, discipline, and the belief that artistic language is built through action —  the importance of learning by doing and never stopping the experimentation, always following the path of her heart.
